Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I try a class before committing?
Yes! We offer a free trial class so you can experience the coaching, culture, and community firsthand. Book through our Free Trial page or drop by the academy at 6 Bond Street, Mordialloc VIC 3195 to get started. Just try and arrive 10 minutes early for your first session, if possible.

2. What age and experience do I need to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Mordialloc?
You don’t need any martial-arts experience to join Bayside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Mordialloc. We welcome kids from 4 years of age, teens, and adults of all fitness levels. Our classes focus on technique, timing and confidence - not strength - so everyone can progress safely and effectively.
3. What should I wear for my first class?
For your first class, just wear comfortable gym clothes such as a T-shirt and shorts or leggings. We are also able to lend you a gi (uniform) for your first trial class. Once you decide to continue, our team can help you choose a gi that is right for you.

4. Do you have classes for kids and teens?
Absolutely. Our Kids & Teens Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program builds confidence, discipline, and respect while teaching real-world self-defence in a safe and fun environment. It’s one of the most established kids’ BJJ programs in Bayside Melbourne, run by experienced instructors who make learning enjoyable and structured.
5. Are there women-only or mixed-gender classes at Bayside BJJ?
Our adult classes are inclusive and family-friendly, with both men and women training together. We have a growing number of female students, and our environment is welcoming, supportive, and ego-free - ideal for women seeking fitness, self-defence, or community connection.
6. How often should I train to improve in BJJ?
Most beginners see great progress training 2 – 3 times per week. At Bayside BJJ, we offer flexible class times throughout the week - including morning, lunchtime, and evening sessions - so you can find a rhythm that fits your schedule.
7. What makes Bayside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different from other clubs?
Led by Head Instructor Peter Polygenis - a 4th Degree Black Belt with nearly 30 years of experience - our academy blends technical instruction with a genuine community feel. We pride ourselves on no lock-in contracts, no grading fees, and a relaxed social space upstairs for members and families (complete with a billiard and table-tennis tables). 8. Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for self-defence?
Yes - BJJ is one of the world’s most effective self-defence systems. At Bayside BJJ, you’ll learn to control and neutralise opponents through leverage and technique rather than brute strength. Our programs teach practical self-defence skills for adults and kids that build confidence, awareness, and calm under pressure.
